Market Life: Description
“Market Life” was inspired by my first experience of Aix-en-Provence. Fresh off the plane and plunged into brilliant sunshine, we joined a walking tour of the town. My senses buzzing and greedy to soak in the sights and sounds, I was attracted by the brightly-coloured parasols of the market place. The hustle and bustle of people, the stacks of crates and arrays of produce were all so exciting.
Each of the figures in this painting is a miniature portrait. Logos on boxes and contemporary clothing set the scene in time and place. My aim was to try and recreate the stimulating environment that I experienced. In order to do this, I have included as many details as possible to challenge the eye of the viewer. There is so much visual information that you cannot take it all in at first glance. The more you look, the more you discover. In this way, I hope that the picture will be all the more rewarding each time it is revisited.
