Dane’s Dyke Beach: Description
Dane’s Dyke Beach is a diptych, made up of two related paintings.
I was lucky enough to be taken to this unspoilt beauty spot whilst visiting relatives in Bridlington. It was a cool autumn day and there was no-one else around to spoil the peaceful tranquility.
On the left, we see Dane’s Dyke Beach facing North. The jumbled piles of chalky rocks contrast against the dark seaweed washed up along the shore. I have tried to pick out the shapes and markings of the larger boulders: their orientation shows how nature has arranged them on the slope of the ground. Strong colours delineate the stones, giving a sketchy feel to the painting. Pinky hues in the foreground bring warmth to the composition.
On the right, we see Dane’s Dyke Beach facing South. I aimed to capture the watery sun trying to break through the clouds, cradled by the dark line of cliffs. In this direction, large boulders are less evident. Instead we see millions of smaller stones, most shapes indistinguishable and thrown into a soft, warm light. The base of the cliff bulges out like the prow of a large boat, strong and bold.
